Description
- The 3528 240 leds per metre offers professional level lighting source. This is not low cost ribbon that degrades over time
- The secret lies in its thin and flexible PCB which allows for long and linear lengths to be preformed with ease. This strip is specifically designed for use in extruded LED mounting profiles. With added advantages such as a higher number of SMD LEDS, the 3528 240 leds per metre offers greater lumen output in a package far smaller than standard T5 fixtures.
- Requires: 24V DC constant voltage driver
- Price is for a single 5 metre roll
Great Video on installing Led Ribbon
What defines a commercial grade LED strip?
LED strip as defined here is high brightness or mid power led mounted on a flexible copper based ribbon, typically this comes in reels of 5 metres in length and will have multiple LED emitters mounted to this flexible substrate. The layout of the leds in terms of circuit design will dictate the forward voltage of the ribbon. This will be fixed irrespective of the cut length you use.
Commercial Grade ribbon will typically have thicker copper traces to accommodate the thermal performance of the ribbon. Most low cost ribbon suffers from shortened life due to poor thermal design considerations and low cost diode selection, sacrificing efficacy and design to reduce cost.
Thermal Considerations?
The ability to create a light source that has both efficacy and long term life and performance is directly related to thermal characteristics. If you cant keep the leds cool you will never have consistent colour stability, flux maintenance and trouble free performance. There is a wide variety of extruded profiles we sell or readily available that can be matched to both the aesthetic and application and the thermal needs of the leds. Always seek the watts per metre information and match that to the thermal capacity of your housing/profile.
Most quality ribbon is now available in a single bin from led manufacturers, with well matched voltage bins and quality phosphors. All of this will be for little benefit if you dont give due consideration to your thermal needs
what strip should i buy and why
There is a plethora of choices available, does not make selection easy.
Top 3 Tips
Led Pitch; Dictates led strip voltage in terms of cut length but also the closer the led pitch the smoother the light will appear. Note when mounting in profiles with diffusers, the smoothness of the light is a combination of both led pitch and the distance from the diffuser, deeper is better but you will sacrifice some output and beam angles
Voltage: The higher the voltage the lower the drive current required and may influence the variety of driver choices available
Colour Consistency; Always look for single bin led strip preferably in 3 Step Macadams, this will ensure over a long linear run the colour is consistent down the line
how do i power or drive my strips
Most led ribbon contains leds and resistors, these resistors work as current limiting devices and as such require a constant voltage led driver to function. The benefit of this is that relatively long strings of ribbon can be powered as leds on ribbon have small groups of led series strings and all those are in parallel. This makes wiring up long runs easier to do in terms of driver selection. Here’s the rub, you need to consider capacity.
-
DRIVER CAPACITY. THE COMBINED WATTAGE OF YOUR LED RIBBON STRING CANNOT EXCEED THE WATTAGE OF THE DRIVER
-
STRIP CAPACITY. THE ELECTRICAL CONSTRAINTS OF THE RIBBON MEAN YOU CANNOT RUN A SINGLE LENGTH OF RIBBON WITHOUT CONSIDERATION OF VOLT AND POWER LOSS OVER DISTANCE.
So in combination of both these issues at some point you will need to add addtional led drivers into the design, typically if you exceed 10 metres
TOP 10 Tips for Led Ribbon installations
- LED strips should be installed in an extrusion or flat aluminium plate for optimum thermal performance
- Leds are point sources of light and very aggressive on the eye, diffuse them or place directly out of line of sight.
- RGB or RGBW is generally not controllable down to a single led. Use pixel based ribbon for maximum effect control.
- LED strips in constant voltage variations have cut lines marked to show where to cut, do not cut anywhere else
- If your design does not match cuttable lengths, consider using single cut ribbon to back fill holes in your light
- If considering weatherproof strips, do not use silicon sleeved versions, these are notorious for thermal dissipation, use a top only epoxy version
- Use Single bin ribbon for colour consistency
- All leds are dimmable, the dimming however is always related to your choice of driver and its capacity to dim
- You should evaluate an LED strip by temporarily installing it with masking tape and testing it before setting it in place
- LED strips should always be installed by a qualified electrician
