Understanding Voltage Drop & LED Driver Efficiency
When designing low-voltage LED strip installations, especially with 12V or 24V systems, voltage drop and driver efficiency are crucial factors that affect performance, longevity, and even safety.
🔌 Voltage Drop in LED Strip Wiring
Voltage drop occurs when electrical current travels through a resistive material like copper. The longer the cable and the thinner the gauge (higher AWG number), the greater the loss. As voltage drops, the LEDs at the far end of the strip receive less voltage, resulting in reduced brightness and inconsistent illumination.
- 18 AWG wire: Suitable up to ~15 metres at 5 W/m with <1V drop
- 24 AWG wire: Excessive drop (>3.9V) at 15 metres — not recommended
- Power injection or thicker cabling is essential beyond 10 metres

⚡ LED Driver Efficiency Matters
Most constant voltage LED drivers have efficiencies between 85% and 94%, depending on the load and ambient temperature. Undersizing the driver can result in higher losses, while oversizing provides thermal headroom and longer service life.
- Peak efficiency usually occurs at 75–90% of rated load
- Using a 100W driver to power an 80W strip allows ~10–20% buffer for losses
- Driver losses convert to heat and must be managed thermally
🧠 Real-World Insight
According to Philips Lighting’s engineering tools, voltage drop should stay within 10% of nominal voltage for optimal LED performance — that means no more than 2.4V drop on a 24V system.
